The National Law Journal has named Hogan Lovells partners Lillian S. Hardy and Sean Marotta to its 2019 D.C. Rising Stars list. The list, highlighted in the August issue, features 40 D.C. lawyers under the age of 40 selected from a highly competitive pool, representing a cross-section of practice areas.
Hardy, a key member of the firm’s Investigations, White Collar, and Fraud practice, has led significant investigations for global corporations of all industries, higher education institutions, and non-profits; counsels clients on compliance and incident preparedness; and was recently appointed to lead the firm’s global, multidisciplinary Crisis Leadership Team. On top of her client work, she is dedicated to diversifying the legal profession and focuses her attention on mentoring young black lawyers and graduates of historically black colleges and universities.
Hardy attributes her success in navigating crisis engagements and complex investigations to mastering the facts and delivering sound judgements under time pressure. "When clients are in a bind, they’re not looking for a song and dance,” says the Crisis Leadership Team leader. “They’re looking for calm and decisive leadership.”
Marotta, a member of the firm’s renowned Appellate group, is a highly-regarded expert on personal jurisdiction, often argues doctrine-developing appeals, and represents pipelines challenging and defending decisions of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Sean is also committed to law student and associate development, and not just at Hogan Lovells; he is the co-founder of the #PracticeTuesday hashtag, a (more-or-less) weekly discussion of professional tips for law students, summer associates, and lawyers.
Marotta knows the value in learning clients’ needs, solving their problems, and staying in touch even when there are no current matters. “Clients need advice, not law review articles,” says the affable appellate lawyer. “Clients want to know what they should do or what the likely result will be. You have to develop judgment and become comfortable making predictions.”
