South Korea. Set to take effect January 2026
South Korea passed the AI Basic Act in December 2024—set to take effect in January 2026—intending to provide a legal framework to advance Korea’s national competitiveness in AI while ensuring ethical standards and public trust. The Act aims to incorporate other fragmented pieces of AI legislation, and will be form the statutory foundation regulating AI in Korea. The Act includes obligations that are aimed to protect users of AI-based services by ensuring the trustworthiness of AI through greater transparency, notifications and certification of certain AI systems.
