Case Overview

The claimants, Syndicat national de l’édition (SNE), Société des Gens de Lettres (SGDL) and Syndicat national des auteurs et des compositeurs (SNAC), are French author and publisher associations. According to the claimants' public statement, the background of this case is the alleged unauthorized use of a corpus of copyright-protected literary works to train generative AI models. In March 2025, they brought proceedings against Meta Platforms Inc. before the 3rd chamber of the Paris Judicial Court. They claim that Meta incorporated protected works, notably through the "Books3" dataset containing approximately 200,000 titles, to train its "Llama" language models without seeking prior authorization. According to the claimants, these practices constitute copyright infringement under the French Intellectual Property Code and free-riding under the French Civil Code. Among the remedies sought, the claimants are requesting the recognition of these infringements, the complete withdrawal of their works from Meta’s training datasets, as well as financial compensation for the affected authors whose works were used without authorization. The case is currently pending before the Paris Judicial Court.
