The CBT denied rumours that it had launched a central bank digital currency (CBDC) and that it had hired a foreign company to implement it.
The CBT said that it was considering all existing alternatives, including a CBDC, as part of its study on the digitisation of the economy. However, this alternative remains only at the "consideration phase".
"The CBT is currently working on the digitisation of finance, in its e-money dimension and not as part of cryptocurrencies. Its teams are currently studying the opportunities and risks inherent to these new technologies, including in respect of cybersecurity and financial stability," the bank said.
