The Dominican Republic will be holding general elections on 19 May 2024 to elect a president, 32 senators in the Senate and all 190 deputies in the Chamber of Deputies.
The current President Luis Abinader of the Partido Revolucionario Moderno will be standing to try to win another four-year term. In 2020, his party won an outright majority in the Senate and the largest number of seats in the Chamber of Deputies.
The other candidates standing for President are former President Leonel Fernández of the Fuerza del Pueblo party and Abel Martinez of the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana.
To win the presidency, a candidate needs to receive 50% plus 1 vote to avoid a second round runoff on 30 June with the two candidates who had the most votes in the first round.
In the bicameral parliament, members of both the Senate and Chamber of Deputies serve four-year terms.
In the upper house Senate elections candidates are elected by first-past-the-post. Members of the lower house Chamber of Deputies are elected in three groups: 178 by proportional representation in each of the 31 provinces and federal district, 5 are elected in single national district through vote accumulation and 7 are elected by Dominicans living abroad.
The Dominican Republic has a population of 11.3 million and there are approximately 7.5 million registered voters. Voter turnout in the 2020 presidential elections was 55.2 % and 55.1% in the parliamentary elections.
