Incumbent Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of the ruling Labor Party won the election and will serve a second term. His party won a majority with 93 seats out of 150 in the House of Representatives.
Under federal electoral law, it is compulsory for all eligible Australian citizens to enrol and vote in federal elections, by-elections and referendums.
Australia has a bicameral parliament comprising of the upper house Senate and lower House of Representatives. The Senate has 76 senators who serve six-year terms and represent a state or territory. There are 12 from each state and two each from the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory. The House of Representatives has 150 members who serve three-year terms and represent one geographic area of Australia.
Members of the House of Representatives are elected by full preferential voting. Each voter elects one member.
Senators are elected by single transferable vote and proportional representation. In states, senators are elected from state-wide 12-member districts and in territories from territory-wide two-member districts.
At this year’s election, voters elected 150 members of the House of Representatives and 40 senators.
Australia has a population of around 27 million and 18.1 million registered voters. Provisional figures show turnout in the 2025 election was 90%.
