Belgium held federal, regional and European elections on 9 June 2024.

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo resigned after his Flemish Liberals and Democrats party (Open VLD) party suffered losses in the general election. De Croo will remain as caretaker prime minister until a new government is formed.

The country has a constitutional monarchy with a federal political structure.

In the federal elections, voters elected members of the lower house Chamber of Representatives for a five-year term. The Chamber of

Representatives has 150 seats from 11 electoral districts made up from Belgium’s 10 provinces and the Brussels-Capital Region. Each district’s seats are proportional to its population.

Voting is compulsory for Belgian citizens aged 16 and over.

The main political parties in Belgium are Open VLD; Reformist Movement; Vooruit; Parti Socialiste; Christian Democratic and Flemish; Les Engagés; Vlaams Belang; National Front; New Flemish Alliance; Flemish Green Party; Ecologist Party; Belgian Workers' Party.

Belgium also held elections for the European Parliament on 9 June 2024.

Belgium has a population of 11.7 million and there are approximately 8.4 million registered to vote. In the 2024 general election, voter turnout was 87.4%.
