Laura Fernández Delgado, the candidate of the ruling Sovereign People's Party (PPSO), won the presidential election with 48.3% of the vote and will serve a four-year term. Álvaro Ramos Chaves of the National Liberation Party (PLN) received 33.4%.
The PPSO won a majority of the seats in the Legislative Assembly with 31, while the PLN won 17. The Broad Front (FA) won 7, Citizen Agenda Coalition (CAC) and the Social Christian Unity Party (PUSC) both won 1 seat each. Members will serve four-year terms.
The President is the head of state and head of government.
Costa Rica has a population of around 5 million and 3.7 million registered voters. Voter turnout was 69%.
