Ghana held a general election on 7 December 2024 to elect the president and members of parliament.
Former president and main opposition candidate John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress won the election after receiving 56.6% of the vote.
Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party, who received 41.6% of the vote, conceded defeat.
Bawumia replaced incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo as the party's candidate as he had served the maximum two terms.
The president is elected using the two-round system. Members of the unicameral, 275-seat parliament are elected directly in single-member constituencies to serve four-year terms.
The main political parties in Ghana are the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress.
Ghana has a population of 34.6 million and approximately 17 million registered voters. In the 2024 election, voter turnout was 60.9%.
