Jordan held parliamentary elections on 10 September 2024 to elect members of the Chamber of Deputies.
The Islamic Action Front, an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, gained the most seats with 31 out of 138.
Under the kingdom's constitution, the government usually resigns after legislative elections and the King, not parliament, appoints the new Prime Minister.
King Abdullah II has appointed Jafar Hassan as the next Prime Minister and tasked him with forming a new government.
Outgoing Prime Minister Bisher al-Khasawneh, who was appointed by the King in 2020, submitted his resignation on 15 September. He will stay on in a caretaker capacity until a new cabinet is formed.
The country has a bicameral National Assembly comprising the lower house 138-member Chamber of Deputies who are directly elected and serve four-year terms, and the upper house Senate of 65 members appointed by the King.
The main political parties in Jordan include the Islamic Action Front; and a number of Arab nationalist and socialist parties, including the Arab Ba'ath Progressive Party, Jordanian Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, Jordanian Democratic People's Party and the Jordanian Democratic Popular Unity Party.
Jordan has a population of 11.3 million and approximately 4.6 million registered voters. The preliminary figure for voter turnout in the 2024 elections is 32.2%.
