Incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera of the ruling Malawian Congress Party is seeking a second term.
Other candidates in the election include former presidents Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party and Joyce Banda of the People’s Party.
A candidate needs to secure more than 50% of the vote to win, but if no one reaches that threshold a second round will be held.
The unicameral National Assembly has 193 Members of Parliament who are directly elected in single-member constituencies using the simple majority (or first-past-the-post) system and serve five-year terms.
Voters will be electing a president, members of parliament and local officials.
Malawi has a population of around 22 million and 7.2 million registered voters. In the 2020 election, voter turnout was 65%.
