Mozambique held a general election on 9 October 2024.
The ruling Mozambique Liberation Front party (Frelimo) candidate Daniel Chapo was declared the winner by the National Election Commission (CNE).
Chapo replaced incumbent President Filipe Nyusi as the party's candidate as he had served the maximum two terms.
The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) had selected its leader Lutero Simango to be its candidate.
The President is the head of state and head of government and is elected for a five-year term. They are elected by absolute majority vote through a two-round system. The Prime Minister is appointed by the President. The current Prime Minister is Adriano Afonso Maleiane.
The country’s Assembly of the Republic has 250 members, elected for a five-year term by proportional representation.
The main political parties are Frelimo, MDM and Renamo.
Mozambique has a population of 34.7 million and approximately 16.6 million registered voters. In the 2024 election, provisional results show voter turnout was 43%.
