Nepal held a snap general election on 5 March 2026.

The Rastriya Swatantra Party's (RSP) won the election with 182 seats in the 275-seat lower House of Representatives. The Nepali Congress won 38 seats, while the Communist Party of Nepal UML (CPN-UML) won 25.

Balendra Shah of RSP was sworn in as Prime Minister on 27 March 2026.

On 12 September 2025, the Federal Parliament of Nepal was dissolved and Sushila Karki was sworn in as interim Prime Minister, following the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli. President Ram Chandra Poudel announced that a snap election would be held on 5 March 2026.

Members of the House of Representatives are elected under a mixed electoral system; 165 members are elected through the first-past-the-post system, while the remaining 110 seats are elected through proportional representation using closed lists of candidates submitted by political parties. Members serve five-year terms.

Nepal’s upper house National Assembly has 59 members serving six-year terms.

Nepal has a population of around 26 million and 19 million registered voters. Turnout in the 2026 election was 60%.
