Peru held a general election on 12 April 2026 to elect the President, Vice President and members of the national legislature.

However, the electoral agency ONPE granted a one-day extension to more than 50,000 voters who were unable to cast their ballots due to technical and logistical problems at a number of polling stations.

As no candidate received over 50% of the vote, a runoff election is scheduled for 7 June 2026.

Peru's current President is José María Balcázar of the Free Peru Party.

Voting is mandatory for citizens aged between 18 and 70.

Peru is returning to a bicameral legislature following a constitutional amendment in 2024. The bicameral legislature will comprise a 60-seat Senate and 130-seat Chamber of Deputies.

Peru has a population of around 35 million and 27 million registered voters. In the 2021 election, voter turnout was 74%.
