Portugal is due to hold a snap general election on 18 May 2025.
The incumbent minority government led by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro of the Democratic Alliance coalition lost a vote of confidence in parliament on 11 March 2025. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa subsequently dissolved parliament on 25 March and scheduled the election for 18 May.
Prime Minister Montenegro won the general election held in March 2024, with his party securing 80 out of 230 seats in the unicameral parliament.
The main political parties are Social Democratic Party (PSD); Socialist Party (PS); Chega (Enough); Liberal Initiative (IL); Portuguese Communist Party (PCP); Left Bloc (BE); People's Party (CDS-PP); People-Animals-Nature (PAN); Livre (L).
Portugal has a population of 10.6 million and around 9 million registered voters. Voter turnout in the 2024 election was 59.9%.
