The ruling Democratic Alliance led by incumbent Prime Minister Luís Montenegro won the election but did not achieve a majority. It received 32.1% of the vote and took 86 seats in the 230-seat unicameral parliament. To win a majority, a party needs 116 seats.
On 11 March 2025, Prime Minister Montenegro's minority government lost a vote of confidence in parliament. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa subsequently dissolved parliament on 25 March and scheduled the election for 18 May.
Prime Minister Montenegro won the general election held in March 2024, with the Democratic Alliance securing 80 seats in parliament.
Portugal has a population of around 10.6 million and 10 million registered voters. Voter turnout in the election was 48.2%.
