Romania will be holding a presidential election on 4 May 2025 and a second round on 18 May, following the annulment of the 2024 presidential election results by the Constitutional Court of Romania.
Ilie Bolojan became acting President in February 2025, following the resignation of President Klaus Iohannis who had served two terms.
The current Prime Minister is Ion-Marcel Ciolacu of the Social Democratic Party.
Romania has a bicameral parliamentary system. The electoral system is based on proportional representation and party lists for both chambers. The upper house Senate has 136 seats, and the lower house Chamber of Deputies has 330 seats. Both chambers are directly elected for four-year terms.
Romania has a population of 19.6 million and approximately 18.9 million registered voters. Turnout in the 2024 parliamentary elections was 52.3% and 52.6% in the annulled 2024 presidential elections.
