Romania held a presidential election on 4 May 2025 and a second round on 18 May, following the annulment of the 2024 presidential election results by the Constitutional Court of Romania in December 2024. 

Nicuşor Dan, who stood as an independent candidate and has been the mayor of Bucharest since 2020, won the presidential election with 54% of the vote.

Ilie Bolojan became acting President in February 2025, following the resignation of President Klaus Iohannis who had served two terms. 

Romania has a bicameral parliamentary system. The electoral system is based on proportional representation and party lists for both chambers. The upper house Senate has 136 seats, and the lower house Chamber of Deputies has 330 seats. Both chambers are directly elected for four-year terms.

Romania has a population of 19.6 million and approximately 17.9 million registered voters. Provisional results show turnout in the 2025 election was 65%.
