Venezuela is due to hold parliamentary and regional elections on 25 May 2025.

Voters will be electing 277 deputies to the National Assembly, as well as regional governors and legislative councils.

Members of the unicameral National Assembly serve five-year terms, the current ruling party has 219 of 277 seats.

In July 2024, Venezuela held a presidential election which according to Venezuela’s electoral authority, the National Electoral Council, was won by President Nicolas Maduro of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) with 51% of the vote. He will serve a third six-year term.

Opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) received 44% of the vote. 

The opposition party’s leader María Corina Machado had been barred from running for office.

The largest opposition grouping, Plataforma Unitaria (PU), includes Cuentas Claras (CC), Fuerza Liberal (FL), Movimiento Izquierda Democrática (MID), Movimiento Progresista de Venezuela (MPV), Movimiento Venezuela Responsable, Sostenible y Emprendedora (Moverse), Primero Justicia (PJ), Progreso Social (PS), Proyecto Venezuela (PV), Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT), Unidos para Venezuela (UPV) and Voluntad Popular (VP). The second-largest grouping is Vamos, which also includes several parties.

Venezuela has a population of approximately 29.3 million and around 20.7 million registered voters. In the last parliamentary election in 2020, voter turnout was 30.4%. In the 2024 presidential election, voter turnout was 59%.
